Jacob Blickenstaff is a portrait and documentary photographer active in the music world in New York City and around the country.
He has shot numerous album covers for Daptone Records, New West Records, Rounder Records, and Norton Records, as well as many independent artists. Since 2013, he has been a regular culture assignment photographer with The New York Times, covering rock, jazz, and classical music, as well as theater and visual art. He created the series "CONTACT" for Mother Jones, a portraiture and interview project which combines collaborative photography with insightful interviews that uncover the creative lives of the subjects.
His work has been published in Rolling Stone, RollingStone.com, NPR Music, The Los Angeles Times, Wax Poetics, and numerous other influential media outlets. In 2009, The Stax Museum of American Soul Music presented his solo exhibition, "Still Life in Soul," a survey of veteran and contemporary soul artists still performing today.
Jacob's work is direct and immediate, driven by musical instinct, experience, and knowledge. Active in music for twenty-five years, he is able to enter the world of the musician: the tiny clubs, concert halls, festivals, recording studios, rehearsal rooms, back stages, and homes, working within the nexus of musicians, managers, labels, publicists, arts presenters and media.
