Join APA/LA and AbelCine for a special event in Los Angeles, Capturing Motion: Introducing Movement to Your Storytelling Process.

The presence and variety of motion imagery in today’s world is growing. From Instagram videos to short films, web series to corporate applications, from livestreams to fine art installations — video is everywhere we look. In recent years, many still photographers have started to add motion capture to their portfolios, and the line between those working strictly in stills and strictly in motion continues to blur.

During this evening event on Thursday, February 16, you will hear from a panel of professionals who have successfully transitioned to working in motion alongside their traditional stills work. They will discuss all aspects of their experience from why they decided to incorporate motion into their body of work, to what challenges they faced when first starting out and how they market themselves in a new industry. There will also be ample time for audience Q&A after the panel discussion.

All attendees will be entered in a raffle to win a Video Workhorse 19 shoulder bag, courtesy of Think Tank Photo.

AbelCine specialists will also be on hand to give an overview of some of the most important technical aspects to be aware of when starting to work with motion imagery.

The second book, Well Souled Brasil launched in early 2016. Currently a resident of Los Angeles, Mark’s company is a certified B Corporation, with his team working hard to minimize their impact on the planet while creating positive change in the world. He actively works for charitable organizations including Communities in Schools, a drop-out prevention organization that works with more than 1.2 million students across the United States, the Sundance Institute, KCRW and the California Coastal Commission.

Amanda Marsalis is the child of a flight attendant mother and a pilot father, and as a teenager, often traveled the world with her camera in hand. After attending the California College of Arts and Crafts, she launched a still photography career.Right out of the gate, she was noted one of the best emerging artists by The PDN30 and named a Surface Avant Guardian. In the past decade, her work has taken her all over the world shooting still campaigns for some of the largest brands and publications in the world. In 2014, Amanda was given the opportunity to direct a narrative feature, Echo Park, starring Mamie Gummer. The film premiered at the LA Film Festival, and will be released theatrically in 2016. On the strength of her feature, Amanda was selected for Fox Studio’s Female Director Initiative – a collective of emerging female directing talent that Fox will mentor to help push a feminine point of view across film, broadcast, and digital programming. As a director, Amanda brings an independent style that engages youthful audiences and captures them in their most honest moments. Her relatable, intimate commercials and promos for such clients as AT&T, Clare Vivier and Summer Break fit effortlessly into the visual language of social media. Amanda has recently directed Reese Witherspoon, Sofia Vergara and Chelsea Handler for Glamour Women of the Year.

Miranda Penn Turin lives in New York and LA, was born in Boston, and isn’t all that scary despite the fact her hair is bigger than her car. She shoots all over the world and is grateful to have the best crew on the planet. If she hadn’t been a photographer, she probably would have been a pyrotechnician. Or maybe a marine biologist, if it weren’t for the seasick thing. Or a pastry chef, but the hours suck. Her advice on visiting her home town: eat lobster and don’t try to do the accent.

Brook Pifer is a New York City based Photographer and Director who turns into an LA local during the winter months. Her work is driven by moments that feel authentic and emotions that are honest. Full of wanderlust and a deep curiosity about the passions of outliers has led to photo and video narratives with musicians, artists and adventuring spirits who live off the grid. Brook’s organic approach to capturing lifestyle imagery has attracted commissioned collaborations from brands such as Levi’s, Under Armour, Fruit of the Loom, MasterCard, Smartwater, Shocktop, Chipotle, Dove and Ford. She is also a two-time winner of the PDN Music Moment for best artist portrait, PDN Self-Promo award for a music video, finalist in the Samsung 4K Film Challenge and a recipient of the Getty RePicture Grant.
