One of the most important things a photographer can do is put their work in print, even during the Digital Age. Print forces us to apply critical thought to our images. Print forces us to make decisions and forces us to define what is required to make the final cut. But putting your work into print, or self-publishing can take on many dimensions. Two of the most important are passion and self-promotion.
Not every story needs an official book deal. Self-publishing fits a middle ground of total freedom based on budget, timeline, and individual expression. Self-publishing allows the photographer to ask, “What is it I truly want to do?” And for those who need to promote their photography, self-publishing allows for fast, fluid creation, tailored to your specific needs. From simple leave-behinds to hardcover portfolios and everything in-between.
Dan Milnor, Blurb’s Creative Evangelist, will walk participants through a wide range of self-publishing options as well as case studies illustrating completed projects. He will cover software options, book and magazine options as well as tips on how to better define a project to reach a self-publishing goal more easily. Participants should bring their curiosity and their questions.
Daniel Milnor is currently “Creative Evangelist” for Blurb, Inc. the world’s premiere print-on-demand publisher. Milnor is a former newspaper, magazine, and commercial photographer who now works primarily on long-term projects. Milnor has self-published hundreds of titles, from the award-winning to the experimental, and is a strong believer in the inherent power of being a creative member of society. He has taught at Art Center College of Design and the Academy of Art University. His work is in the collections of The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The George Eastman House, and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. He lives in and loves New Mexico.
