Every age celebrates the photographers that captures the spirit of that time. These creative, successful people could photograph the greats - the artists, writers and celebrities of the day - so well because they were celebrities in their own right. In the second half of the 19th Century it was Nadar. In the 1920s and 1930s it was Steichen and Snowden followed by David Bailey in the 1960s and Richard Avedon in the 70s and 80s.
