July 13 - July 18: Photographing Dance with Allen Birnbach

The medium of dance offers a wealth of visual opportunity to photographers. Line, texture, form, balance, power, symmetry, and gesture—these are the building blocks of the art form. Under Allen's guidance, participants learn how to observe the power and beauty of dance in a critical way and employ that knowledge to capture the peak of a dancer’s movement or gesture. Lighting is one of the primary tools we use to create depth, accentuate musculature, express emotion, and freeze or blur movement.

July 27 - August 1: The Evocative Portrait with Andrew Southam

© Andrew Southham

Under Andrew's guidance, we discuss some of the masters of portrait photography and examine how they relate to and inform our work. We discover how the choice of location or studio further defines our work and learn to more effectively express our ideas using wardrobe, hair, makeup, and lighting. We develop interpersonal skills that deepen our connection with subjects and clients alike. In daily photography sessions with models—both on location and in the studio—participants explore the use of various light sources, including strobe, Kino-Flo, tungsten, and daylight. This hands-on experience enables us to expand our relationship to portraiture and enrich our experience as photographers.

Personal portraits can be both mirrors and windows. The best ones capture the subject’s essence, while simultaneously conveying the unique qualities of the image-maker. Meaningful and poignant portraits are created from personal relationships. Photography is rooted in the real world, yet memory, mystery, and magic are often present in our images.
