APA Awards 2025 - we are now accepting entries in our National photography contest - here are the details:

  1. Our annual competition is open to all photographers at every level, worldwide -- everyone from emerging photographers to established professionals.
  2. Our Judges will select 46 APA Award Winners this year from 15 categories and one Best of Show.
  3. APA members save on each entry. APA Leader level members save 50% on each image and get featured in our awards annual publication.
  4. The new "Series" is a flat rate for 2-6 images. Entries for the Series are submitted through Picter. Enter here.

Awards Deadline

The submission deadline is June 26, Midnight PDT.

Do not enter a series on the APA website (our site charges per image)
To enter a series, you will need to create an account on the Picter website, then enter APA Awards SERIES

  • $50: Series/flat rate per project (2-6 images)
  • $50: AI Series/flat rate per project (2-6 images)

Regarding AI - It’s important to see and discuss where the future of AI is taking art and how photographers are using the new tools.
AI-generated images cannot be submitted in the 14 photography categories.
However, we have created a space for AI in SERIES.
All SERIES include an area for a statement. In the statement, explain how you created the AI SERIES.
We want to see how you develop a personal style in a SERIES using AI.
Please note - AI imagery will not be eligible for consideration for Best of Show

Biopic of Matt Denten

Matt Denten, Executive Vice President, Creative Director at Arc Worldwide

Matt believes good design is good business and that creativity makes problem solving fun and effective. Matt has over 25 years of experience in Commerce Marketing, Retail Design, Promotions, Brand Activation and Experiential Event Marketing. Matt has led creative teams for numerous clients that include McDonald, Dunkin, Pernod-Ricard, Coca-Cola, Molson Coors, Diageo, Mondelez, United Airlines, Walmart, and Samsung. Matt created the global retail design system for McDonalds and helped the brand reverse years of negative food-quality perceptions, and his work on clients like Molson Coors, Dunkin, and Coca-Cola have won numerous industry awards.

Biopic of Karly DeWees

Karly DeWees, Senior Producer at Apple (Contract)

Karley is a Senior Producer based in Los Angeles. I currently work at Apple where I oversee production across multiple lines of business. Before joining Apple I worked at various advertising agencies producing global campaigns across a variety of mediums. My experience spans photo, digital, and motion production, illustration, animation, design, research, licensing, client relations, project management, account management, and post-production.

Marjorie Fajardo, Content Producer at The Martin Agency

Marjorie began her professional career as a portrait and sports photographer in NYC. She made the pivot into advertising as a producer where she currently manages video productions for various brands at The Martin Agency.

Nikita S. Freyermuth, Art Director at Annex88 + Freelance

Nikita is a Brooklyn-based art director, photographer, set designer, and multidisciplinary artist. Her work is rooted in creating striking visuals and meaningful narratives that uplift communities, celebrate culture, and honor the human experience in harmony with the natural world.

Scott Hohman, Associate Creative Director at FCB Health NY

Scott is an award-winning multidisciplinary creative with nearly two decades of experience specializing in high-science brands, including medical devices, pharmaceuticals, med tech, and health networks. With a strong foundation in health and wellness, it’s no surprise he spends his free time staying active—whether getting lost in nature or working out at the gym. To keep his creativity flowing, Scott draws inspiration from art galleries and enjoys discovering new places and cultures through travel.

Biopic of Juliana	Hong

Juliana Hong, Senior Producer at Amp Agency

Juliana is currently an agency producer, based in Los Angeles, leading campaigns for Aquaphor, Maruchan, Fujitsu, and Apple and Eve. Originally from Brazil, she came to the US to pursue her BA at USC - Cinematic Arts, and has since established 15+ years experience producing films, shows, music videos, branded content and commercials.

Lizzy Lehn, Producer at GALE

Lizzy brings over a decade of experience in commercial advertising to the panel, honed through her work as a producer in photography, illustration, and broadcast commercials. With a photography degree as her foundation, she is currently a Producer at GALE, following a significant tenure at BBDO NYC.

Biopic of Odalis Lopez

Odalis Lopez, Senior Producer/EP at Accenture Song

Odalis is a Baltimore-based Producer. She enjoys telling stories that go deeper than the surface and exploring characters who are often silenced. She combines her experience in commercial production with her passion for documentary film production to facilitate safe, honest, and impactful spaces. Currently, she is a Senior Producer/Executive Producer at Accenture, and in her free time produces documentaries.

Sharon Mendelow, Executive Producer (Freelance)

Sharon moved to New York City from Buffalo right after university to kickstart her career as a stockbroker on Wall Street. However, after a few years, she discovered her true passion for photography and film, prompting a shift into art production for luxury and celebrity photographers. As the media landscape evolved, Sharon expanded her expertise to motion content production and now specializes in 360 activations. With experience across healthcare, tech, CPG, and luxury, she works with both agencies and direct-to-brand productions to create dynamic and engaging visual content.

Nicole Oliha, SVP Creative and Brand Strategy at City National Bank

Nicole is the Head of Creative and Brand Strategy at City National Bank. Prior to her move to LA in 2016, she was in creative for many years at Target headquarters in Minneapolis, where she learned from some of the best in the biz about brand consistency and design discipline. A creative enthusiast, she loves everything about the process - from collaboration to business results. On the weekends Nicole changes from heels to Nikes as she and her husband cheer for their son in all his sports.

Sharon Romang, VP, Creative at Front Row

"Sharon Romang is a creative leader focused on insight-driven, performance-minded storytelling across digital platforms. She is currently VP of Creative at Front Row, where she leads the Marketplace Partnerships team and develops full-funnel creative for CPG, Beauty, and Wellness brands on Amazon and Walmart.

Originally from Buenos Aires and based in NYC, Sharon has built and led creative teams at marketing agencies, studios, and publications including New York Magazine, United Virtualities, Headlight, and Smartly.io. Her experience spans advertising, creative services, and digital marketing, with a focus on systems that connect brand and performance.

Brandon Ruffin, Multi Disciplinary Artist at Ruff Draft

Brandon will be the sole judge of the AI submissions category. Brandon currently works on a research team in the field of Computational Photography at Google, pushing the capabilities of AI, machine learning, and traditional photography. Brandon has had an active role in developing the Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and Pixel 8, which was awarded the title of “Best Smart Phone” at the prestigious Global Mobile Awards.

Diego Valdez, Global Content Studio Manager at ASICS Corporation

Diego can often be found cycling around Southern California, perfecting my pour-over or on my skateboard. When I'm not doing that, I'm usually shooting for work and pleasure. My background is in commercial and corporate photography and I've worked with clients spanning from non-profits to fortune 500's. Currently I'm the Global Content Studio Manager at ASICS Corporation. Our team oversees all global photography and video used for e-commerce and campaigns.

Awards Fundamentals

Anyone can enter the APA Awards:

  • APA members receive a discount based on their APA membership level
  • Images in the 14 categories are assigned an arbitrary ID for "blind" judging
  • Images in the SERIES do include the name and social media links of the photographers
  • There is no limit on the number of entries you can submit in the 14 Categories
  • Limit to 5 Series
  • The same image can be entered in more than one category, but can only win once
  • An image that has previously won in the APA Awards is not eligible to win again
  • An image that won previously in any other APA photo competition is eligible
  • Only images in the "Fresh / New Work" category have a creation date requirement (created in 2025)
  • The decision of the judges of the competition shall be final and binding
  • Entry fees are non-refundable
  • Winners will be notified in August
  • The winners will be officially announced by September
  • Winners must supply the hi-rez files to appear in the printed APA Awards book
  • APA does not accept responsibility for or warrant any product being delivered by a sponsor
  • Any applicable tax due on the awarding of prizes is the sole responsibility of each winner
  • Prizes and the APA Awards book are shipped to U.S. addresses only

Image Entry Guidelines

  • All files must be in JPG format
  • File size limit: 2 MB
  • Image size no smaller than 1200 pixels
  • Images size no longer than 1800 pixels
  • The color profile is sRGB, image resolution: 72 ppi
  • Do not include characters (©, ®, •, $, #) in file names as these can corrupt the file
    Note- the jurors do not see the file names so you can use your name on the file name
  • Images must not contain any text that is not part of the image
  • Winners will be required to provide a high-resolution version for print

Submission Guidelines

  • APA members log in to apanational.org using your APA credentials.
  • Non-APA members can enter by creating a guest account.
  • The system will automatically charge you based on your APA membership level.
  • You can enter the same image in more than one category by paying the additional fee(s).
  • Please upload in batches of no more than ten (10) entries at a time, as the site will time out.
  • Once your transaction is complete, your submission is final.
  • Log in to your APA account at any time to review your entries.
  • You may submit additional images until the final deadline.
  • APA reserves the right to disqualify any winner not providing the required winning photo in the requested file format and size within two weeks of APA’s request via the contact information supplied by the entrant. Replacement winners will be selected at the judge’s discretion.
  • You will receive an email confirmation upon entering. If you do not receive a confirmation email, you are not in the contest - contact: membershiprep@apanational.org

Terms

By entering The APA Awards Annual Photo Competition, Entrants:

  1. Warrant that the whole copyright and any other form of intellectual property right in the work is vested in them.
  2. Warrant that they have not in any way assigned, licensed, disposed of, or otherwise encumbered any of their rights which allow them to deal freely with the work and the copyright therein.
  3. Warrant that they have obtained model or property releases from any persons and/or property owners requiring such, featured in their submitted photographs allowing publication in any and all media forms.
  4. Acknowledge that APA relies fully upon the warranties and licenses given by Entrants when submitting their entries for consideration to The APA Awards Annual Photo Competition.
  5. Entrants indemnify and hold APA harmless from any claims, actions, proceedings, costs and expenses arising as a result of any allegation that the relevant Entrant did not own or is not wholly entitled and authorized to allow publication and reproduction of the work by APA.

Reproduction

  1. Entrants retain full copyright to their images and grant no usage to APA other than those granted herein. APA shall not be liable for any loss or damage or exclusion of any entry. It also acknowledges the right of APA and the APA Awards sponsors to use the photographer's likeness and information, as well as the winning images, in exhibitions and promotions, in any and all forms of print, electronic and digital media, and any promotional materials related to the APA Awards Annual Photo Competitions following the Competition winners’ announcement.
  2. Submission of an entry to the competition automatically constitutes the contestant's acceptance of all conditions set forth in the above rules.
