“For What It Is” a documentary and portrait-based photography project centered around skateboarding culture and the people within it. At its core, this project embodies what skateboarding is all about—commitment, resilience, and a deep sense of belonging. Skating isn’t something that can be casually picked up; it takes time and dedication. To truly understand it, you have to invest in it and see it For What It Is. This project specifically follows Crooks, a local skate shop that has become a home for a large group of skaters. This group of people are often seen as standoffish, but that is only because people don't allow themselves to learn from their viewpoint. This has pushed them to surround themselves with people like-minded to them, creating a bond stronger than any group I've ever seen. Through themes of youthfulness, grit, brotherhood, and loyalty, For What It Is offers a raw, honest look at a culture that thrives on perseverance and self-expression. Photographer: Raymond Alva
