Now in the third installation of this series 'An Evening With', we are bringing on another heavy hitter in the industry. The first event showcased the dynamic duo, Michele Romero and Art Streiber, then Frank Ockenfels 3 and Carol LeFlufy shared their journey through 30 years of working together and now APA Los Angeles and Space For Arts present An Evening With Miranda Penn Turin. Miranda will be bringing some special friends along to share the work they have done, why they did it, and how they came to the final product. Join us in learning the process she does so well.
Miranda Penn Turin is a freelance photographer and director who has been specializing in portraiture, fashion, and beauty for over thirty years. She was born in Boston, Massachusetts and splits her time between New York and LA - she shoots all over the world and is grateful to have the best crew on the planet. She first picked up a camera at about eight when her mother gave her a Polaroid Swinger for her birthday, but didn't get serious until she was sixteen - after that, she took photography classes every year, it became her informal minor in college. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in creative writing, but her passion for photography overrode her major. In her summer breaks, she interned with Boston photographers and began assisting once she graduated. She still considers assisting the greatest photographic education and feels that this step is essential to truly hone one's skill and know-how. Her best advice for any young photographer is just that - assist, assist, assist.
Miranda's intention when she shoots is to reveal the epic, whatever the subject. She still shoots film whenever she can, loves her 30 year old Nikon FE2 and her Calumet 4x5. She has, however, embraced the digital and loves the formidable reciprocity and range of this generation of cameras. Her clients include Coty, Max Factor, Sony, Universal, Bloomingdales, Fox, Warner Bros. Records, Converse, Conde Nast, the Four Seasons, Chase, MTV, and many others. She is currently working with Voices4Freedom, a humanitarian organization committed to abolishing human trafficking all over the world. Her images of the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu provide the cover art for The Book of Joy, which spent 37 weeks on the New York Times top fifteen bestseller list. A writer as well, she just completed her first novel.
Diane Cooper is a 23 year creative veteran in network television photo publicity, with expertise in leadership, photography & video production, navigating and leveraging strategic partnerships and personalities, creating marketing and publicity campaigns reflecting the network’s brand, and leading teams to optimal performance. Over the course of her career at FOX Broadcasting Co. Diane has launched and managed the shoot production and creative photography for such iconic shows as: HOUSE, NEW GIRL, BONES, THE LAST MAN ON EARTH, THE X-FILES and 24. Additionally, Diane has handled the corporate photography for the company for the last 20 years which includes handling shoots for key high-level executives and corporate events. During her long tenure with FOX Broadcasting Co. Diane has had the great opportunity of working worldwide with many amazingly talented photographers, videographers and too many skilled vendors to name. She has also developed key relationships with television show Creators, Executive Producers and on-set crew who are the key to successfully navigating production photography.
Diane's previous career experience in the photography industry includes Artist Agent and Syndication sales with SYGMA Photo Agency in New York as well as various Account Executive positions within the Stock Photography industry.
Diane lives in Culver City, CA with her husband and 14 year old son Luke.
Ruthi Stirling is an award-winning graphic designer and creative director whose career path spans the disciplines of print, digital and motion advertising, package design and in-store merchandising.
During her career, Ruthi has lead the global creative teams for Neutrogena, Johnson and Johnson and most recently for OPI Products, where her collaboration with Miranda Penn Turin elevated the aesthetic of the brand to unrivaled new heights.
Originally from Louisiana, Ruthi developed her strong appreciation for photography amidst the colorful and diverse culture of New Orleans and the graphic landscapes of the Bayou Teche.
Peggy Callahan’s sense of fairness (or maybe masochism) has driven her work in television and human rights activism. She has spent decades as a reporter, producer, director, TV exec telling stories about poverty, the foster care system, the death penalty, farm-workers, racism, homelessness and slavery to name just a few. Peggy’s powerful, award-winning storytelling has helped change laws and lives. Along the way she learned that, contrary to popular opinion, Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation did not end slavery around the globe. So Peggy co-founded two international anti-slavery organizations that have helped free tens of thousands of people from slavery, consulted with governments around the world and helped get laws passed against slavery in the US and abroad..
Currently, Peggy is producing a film with His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu and heads an anti-slavery organization, Voices4Freedom which has 28 transitional schools in India that help free entire villages from slavery.
