One of the most important things a photographer can do is put their work in print, even during the Digital Age. Print forces us to apply critical thought to our images. Print forces us to make decisions and forces us to define what is required to make the final cut. But putting your work into print, or self-publishing can take on many dimensions. Two of the most important are passion and self-promotion.
Not every story needs an official book deal. Self-publishing fits a middle ground of total freedom based on budget, timeline, and individual expression. Self-publishing allows the photographer to ask, “What is it I truly want to do?” And for those who need to promote their photography, self-publishing allows for fast, fluid creation, tailored to your specific needs. From simple leave-behinds to hardcover portfolios and everything in-between.
Dan Milnor, Blurb’s Creative Evangelist, will walk participants through a wide range of self-publishing options as well as case studies illustrating completed projects. He will cover software options, book and magazine options as well as tips on how to better define a project to reach a self-publishing goal more easily. Participants should bring their curiosity and their questions.
