Specialty: Fine Art

Chapter: Los Angeles /
Pro Type: Photographer

Southern California based photographic artist Chari Godakanda was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka. After moving to Palm Springs, California in 1996 he was introduced to the world of professional photography, film & imaging.

Chari’s personal photography has primarily documented humans & the environment & their interaction with one another. In 2009 he rediscovered his love for film & began capturing isolated moments in time on film, mostly in black & white.

His return to Sri Lanka after 14 years in 2010 led to a new series of work focusing on the islands daily life, cultures, religions & all modes of public transportation. His time away from the island significantly altered his perspective of the experiences he had growing up. “I’m fascinated with the many temples, which brings back fond memories of going to them with my father every full moon.”

Chari has strived to combine his photography with his passion for equality, education, social justice & community outreach. He has worked on several middle and high school youth programs, including teaching photography at the Palm Springs Art Museum, mentoring high school students and in 2017 collaborating with the public arts commission of City of Palm Springs and the Palm Springs Unified School District on a high school photography project “Portraits of a City ~ Palm Springs”. Currently he is an artist with BAM {boys art mentoring}, a middle school art pilot program with the Palm Springs Unified School District which aims to use the arts to motivate, engage & encourage at risk students to stay in school and successfully graduate. For six years Chari served his community as an EMT & a certified volunteer firefighter with the Riverside County Fire Department at station #36 in North Palm Springs.

“I strive to capture stillness and life’s movement…the universal thread that weaves us all together.”
