Elliot Ross

Pro Type: Photographer

Elliot Ross (b.1990) is a Taiwanese-American photographer rooted in the American West. Ross’s practice is defined by an intimate connection with his subjects through nurtured personal relationships within communities, methodical research, and a passion for history that together form works that unfold over long periods of time. At the core is the central inquiry of how landscapes–both natural and artificial–shape community and culture. Within this framework of cultural geography, his ongoing projects investigate the water crisis unfolding across the Western United States, how indigenous communities on the frontlines of climate change are confronting a physical and spiritual loss of home through self determination, and how the artifice of geopolitical borders shape and divide identity. His work has been widely published, with notable print features in The Atlantic, National Geographic, TIME, The New York Times, The New Yorker and is the author of 2 books with another forthcoming in 2023. The National Geographic Society named Ross a National Geographic Explorer in 2019 for his ongoing documentary work in indigenous Alaska.
