Marilia Gurgel

Marilia Gurgel is a photographer, filmmaker and multimedia artist focused on visual narratives. She was born in Mossoro, in the northeast of Brazil. She has a degree in Performing Arts and BA for Theater Direction from Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. In 2022, she graduated from the Documentary Practice and Visual Journalism program at the International Center of Photography, in New York.

From 2014 onwards, she started to work in the Brazilian film industry, she has been in several audiovisual productions for cinema, advertising and TV, including works for channels such as BBC UK, HBO Brazil and Netflix Brazil.

Marilia is the director of the music video "Bagana" (Biltre), and the dance film "Malandro", with Laryssa França.

In 2022 she released her first short film "Saudades", this project was the recipient of the grant "Poti-Cultural Sesc-RN 2021."

Currently she is based in New York working on her project "Let Me Tell You About Them". This project was awarded with the 2023 Media Arts Works in Progress Fund at En Foco Inc.
