Let’s talk about different ways we can incorporate motion into our work, from using a stills approach to create GIFs and stop motion, to experimenting with motion ourselves and working as a director with a DP. This panel discussion will address

• Fielding requests for motion assets

• Estimating & staying competitive

• Integrating motion into a stills shoot (Think: creative, lighting, crew,  timing)

• Post production

The panel will include folks who produce a variety of visual assets for their clients. We all know how important it is to adapt and evolve, and motion is another opportunity to carve a unique path and stand out in this industry.

Your Star-Studded Panel

Sarah James (she/they)

Sarah is into all things creative. As a multi-disciplinary artist, they draw inspiration from everyday life; shooting, drawing, painting, or writing daily. Getting started in commercial photography in 2009 after completing a Bachelor’s Degree in Art, Sarah interned and assisted both still life and location shoots eventually leading to a number of years as an in-house photographer for a large commercial studio. Sarah's current role is as a Creative Partner alongside an advertising photographer/director, developing and creating visual narratives. Their work focuses on bringing the imaginary to life, elevating the intrinsic beauty of the ordinary, and creating worlds that inspire.

RC Rivera (Renato Carlos) (he/him)

RC is a photographer, director & robot wrangler based in San Francisco, CA and Manila, Philippines.  He shoots people, places and things in beauty, sport lifestyle and tech world. Born in Pasig City (part of Metro Manila, Philippines). 1 of 7 kids. Army brat. When he's not behind the camera, he can be found tinkering on a motorcycle, trying to whip up something from the momofuku cookbook, checking kayak for last minute travel deals, and/or annoying his wife and two sons.

Fun facts : He has a robot. Yes, a robot. She holds cameras and things. Her name is DORIS. He can marry anyone in the state of California. He rebuilt his first motorcycle with the help of youtube. He makes a mean pizza dough ( at least he thinks he does).

Nicole Morrison (she/her)

Nicole creates colorful, graphic images and GIFs that help brands tell their story. She likes to create an aspirational version of reality that feels like a sunny day. Nicole attended SF State University where she found a love for telling stories through pictures in the Photojournalism department. She is inspired by people and brands that work towards creating a more sustainable and just planet. She is passionate about improving our food systems, paying people fairly, sourcing materials ethically, clean products for our plates and bodies, and reducing plastic and other harmful waste. 

Jason Mitchell (of Ransom & Mitchell) (he/him)

As a San Francisco director, cinematographer, photographer, editor, etc., there are a number of different irons in the fire. My motion skills were forged in the Navy as a broadcast journalist, tempered in the burgeoning streaming media industry at the turn of the century, and sharpened with a BA in Cinema at SFSU while working as a narrative and commercial cinematographer. Intermixed with shooting, I’ve edited a number of award-winning films, including They Turned Our Desert Into Fire, winner of Best Documentary at the Sao Paulo International Film Festival.  

During the course of this journey, I pushed myself into photography, developing bodies of work that have been collected internationally and recognized as a finalist for Photolucida Critical Mass and the Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize. This path has informed the work I do together with partner Stacey Ransom as the fine and commercial artist duo Ransom & Mitchell.

Ransom & Mitchell is the wonderful mess created from smashing together the creative talents of set designer – digital artist Stacey Ransom and director – photographer Jason Mitchell. Our process is a combination of cinematic lighting, theatrically-designed sets, hand-crafted custom props, and CG, which are digitally composited and painted with an illustrative approach inspired by the Italian and Dutch Master. We fashion our brand of magical realism by blurring the lines between photography, digital art, and classical painting to create worlds that cannot exist (and quite possibly shouldn’t).

Dan Simmons (he/him)

is a commercial product photographer & director specializing in technology, cosmetics, apparel, and beauty liquid action shots. I like a good challenge and am used to the fast-paced environment our industry demands. One personal favorite thing to shoot is liquids because everything has to line up just in time to get the shot.
